Dental

Overview

Dentistry is the study of the anatomy as well as the treatment and prevention of the illnesses and disorders of the mouth, teeth, gums, and jaw. Similar to medicine, dentistry has been studied and practiced throughout history and is one of the oldest universal health care professions.

The modern basic dental curriculum and its different specializations and sub specialties were created to enable doctors to provide a wide variety of primary and advanced dental treatment to a larger population in a safe and efficient manner. Diagnoses and treatment of disorders has advanced quickly in dental science during the past several years.

You can practice dentistry and get wealthy if you have a degree in it alongside helping people achieve and maintain a good oral health and serving the society in many ways possible.

Undergraduate Courses

  • BDS

Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) is a five-year bachelor’s degree in dentistry. This involves four years of classroom instruction and one year of internship. Students in this subject learn about dentures, dental issues, and surgery. It is also a strong career-oriented degree programme, with numerous chances in the hospital, pharmaceutical, and medical device manufacturing industries. Imaging, tissue grafting, implants, laser surgery, and trauma are all part of this profession. You will be engaged by the medical college, hospitals, nursing homes, health firms, health ministry, and back office medical consultancy after finishing this course.

To be eligible for BDS admission, students must have completed their 12th grade or equivalent in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English with 50% or above in the general category and 40% in the reserved category. Students must be 17 years old on or before December 31st of the year of admission.

After finishing your 12th grade or 10+2 or equivalent, you will be required to take the National Eligibility Cumulative Entrance Test (NEET-UG), which is the sole entrance test for admission to all BDS institutes in India. The test is very competitive as lakhs of students appear for the few thousand BDS seats.

BDS graduates can opt for numerous careers such as dental technician, prosthodontist, dental hygienist, dental consultant and numerous other roles or even go for higher studies to gain specializations in other dentistry fields and areas.

Postgraduate Courses

  • MDS

The second step toward specialising in one or more dental specialties is to get a Master of Dental Surgery degree (MDS). All admissions to MDS programmes are based on NEET-PG results.

MDS research might be difficult at times. Most institutions in India now provide all or part of the nine MDS specialisations that the Dental Council of India (DCI) has authorised and regulated.

Following MDS, individuals can pursue a career in private practice, private hospitals, government hospitals, and so on. Dental departments at hospitals, clinics, research centers, and educational institutions are common places for MDS dentists to work as Dentists, Dental Researchers, Dental Teachers, and so on
